I first came up with the idea for an It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia Boardgame around the same time everybody else did on their some 3,000th rewatch of this depraved television show. Little did we realize that this would turn into a mission of over 20GB of assets alone (and that's not including the screenshots of every single episode!) I would work on it on nights I couldn't sleep mostly, and during the days I would come up with tenuous rules to guide the players along... something.
In a way that's what makes a boardgame of Sunny so unique. How exactly do you make progress in a game about a show where the characters are making no progress? The goal is simple -- just like the characters in It's Always Sunny, your goal is selfish with only your own interests in mind. If that sounds like all board games to you, then congratulations, you've just struck gold!
Each character has their own unique set of stats and skills, as well as a set of starting items. Throughout the game, your actions have consequences. As you encounter different scenarios your characters mood and stats will be affected allowing you to react in different ways every time you play.
Overall, the game has been described to me as a self-run game of DnD. There is no DM, that is up to each players personal goal - sometimes you build each other up, sometimes you tear each other down, but you're always tearing up some fun! For example, Charlie may have Ghoul Catching as his player-described personal goal, whereas Dennis may have Disproving False Realities as his. There will be times where Dennis will want Charlie to work with him, ultimately helping Dennis closer to his goal.
As of this moment, I have well over 200 fully completed cards and assets, but I have many many more still left to do. My plan is to get enough assets to have the game fully playable, and I am very close after around 2 years! I'm not sure exactly how I'll proceed forward, I may release packs by season afterwards. Currently, the only way to play it will be through Tabletop Simulator, however it is not publicly available yet. I do hpoe to one day turn this into a personal boardgame. Even better if FX reached out!
Thanks for checking it out!
